How to Know If Your Car Battery Needs to Be Replaced

All good things must come to an end, and that includes Pocatello car batteries. How do you know if your car battery needs to be replaced? If you’re seeing any of these signs, it might be time to get your battery replaced:

  • Dimming headlights
  • More frequent need for engine revving or jump starts
  • Takes longer to start the engine when you turn the key/push the button
  • Unusual power fluctuations

What Causes Car Battery Deterioration?

There are a range of factors that result in car battery deterioration. What causes your battery to break down? Here’s our list of what can cause you to get your battery replaced in Ammon.

  • Heat: Hot water will cause the liquids inside your car battery to evaporate, so if you’re in a hot climate throughout the year, you’ll tend to go through car batteries quicker.
  • Vibrations: If you’ve got loose hold-down clamps on your battery or you drive on rougher roads, you’ll probably have internal battery parts that break down faster.
  • Needing a Jump: If you’ve left your lights on overnight or idled your engine for too long and you need to get your car jump started as a result, this will shorten your battery life significantly.
  • Time: Your car battery will only last so many charge cycles and the death of your car battery is unavoidable, but if you care for it properly, you can get the full life out of your car battery.

How to Test a Car Battery

We’ll test your car battery during regular maintenance on your Rexburg car. However, if you’re looking to test it between those times, here’s our guide for you:

The Headlight Test:

  1. Turn your engine on, put the car in park, and ensure your headlights are on.
  2. Rev the engine and check to see if the brightness of the headlights changes.
  3. If you see brighter headlights when you rev, that means the current in the battery isn’t strong enough to keep the lights normally bright while you’re idling.
  4. Take your car in for service at this point and we’ll help you out.

Using a Digital Multimeter:

  1. Set the voltmeter to 20 DC volts.
  2. Under the hood, touch the black negative terminal with the black negative meter probe.
  3. Touch the red positive terminal with the red positive meter probe.
  4. Have someone else turn on the headlights and check the voltmeter rating.
  5. When it’s 80 degrees Fahrenheit outside, 12.5 volts or higher means you’ve got a full battery. If you’re at 12.3 volts, you’re at roughly 75% charge. 11.8 volts or lower, it’s time to get your battery replaced because you’re low on charge.
