How To Jumpstart A Car

mechanic jump starting a car
Do you know what to do if your Nissan battery dies on the road in Idaho Falls? If you’re not sure how to jumpstart a car yourself, it’s a good idea to research car jump service in your area. Plus, sometimes a car won’t jumpstart — even with right supplies and know-how. When it comes to the 12+ volts inside your battery, it’s best not to leave anything to chance! Read the guide below from Ron Sayer Nissan service center technicians to learn how to jumpstart a car battery safely.

What Does it Mean to Jumpstart a Car Battery?

Ready to learn how to jumpstart a car the right way? You’ll need two things: jumper cables and access to another car’s battery. To jumpstart a car battery simply means connecting your dead battery to a good battery with jumper cables, and then starting your engine so that power from the good battery flows into the dead battery.

How to Properly Jumpstart a Car Battery

Get your jumper cables and ask a friend (or friendly stranger) if you can get a jump off their vehicle. Then follows these steps for the proper way to jumpstart a car:

  1. Park the other car facing yours.
  2. Make sure both vehicles have the parking brake engaged in Park or Neutral.
  3. Turn both keys to the Lock (1st) ignition position.
  4. Open both hoods and locate each car’s battery. In most cars, the battery is covered by a plastic hood. Lift the hood to access the terminals.
  5. Find the positive and negative battery terminals (marked with “+” and “-”) and inspect them for corrosion.
  6. Pick up the red jumper cable and connect one end to the dead battery’s positive terminal. Connect the other end to the good battery’s positive terminal.
  7. Now pick up the black cable and connect one end to the good battery’s negative terminal.
  8. Take the other end of the black cable and clamp it onto an unpainted metal surface on your car’s frame, away from the battery.
  9. Check once more that all 4 clamps are secure. Then start the engine of the other car and allow it to run for about 5 minutes.
  10. Now try starting your engine. If your car starts, perfect! You now know how to jumpstart a car battery.
  11. Keep the engine running! To fully recharge your battery, drive the car around for at least 15 minutes before cutting the engine.
